What it is
Folliculitis is inflammation of hair follicles. It often happens when follicles are damaged or blocked — for example by friction or shaving — and is commonly linked to bacteria such as staph, or sometimes to yeast.
Common signs
small red bumps or white-headed pustules around hair follicles · itching or tenderness · crusting.
Everyday care
keep the area clean, avoid scratching and picking, use warm moist compresses, use clean razors and reduce friction from hats or helmets.
When to see a doctor
if bumps don't improve within a few days, spread, keep coming back, are very painful, or if you have fever. Folliculitis may need prescription antibiotic or antifungal treatment.
