Seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp

What it is

A common, non-contagious skin condition that causes scaly patches and redness, mainly on oily areas such as the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose and behind the ears. It tends to come and go.

Common signs

greasy, yellowish or white scales · redness · itching · flaking that can extend to the eyebrows or around the nose.

What can trigger flares

stress, cold dry weather and long periods without washing.

What helps

Regular use of a medicated shampoo with an OTC active such as salicylic acid, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, coal tar or ketoconazole. Leave it on the scalp as directed before rinsing. Salicylic acid helps soften and loosen scale so it can be washed away.

When to see a dermatologist

if symptoms don't improve with OTC care, spread, or affect large areas of the body — prescription treatment may be needed.
